Morning classes at San Diego City College were overshadowed yesterday when a man climbed a large tree on campus and refused to come down, triggering an hours-long standoff that pulled in both police and fire crews and kept eyes glued to the scene for much of the day.
Witnesses told authorities the man appeared impaired and ignored repeated efforts by officers to coax him down. Nearly six hours after he went up, he finally climbed back to the ground, where officers immediately took him into custody.
San Diego Fire-Rescue Department officials said witnesses first saw the man scale the tree at about 8:30 AM, and San Diego police arrested him once he descended, according to 10News. The station reported that authorities have not released the man’s identity or any possible motive.
Downtown campus, visible scene
San Diego City College’s downtown campus sits near Balboa Park and Interstate 5, according to San Diego City College. Its central location meant the law enforcement and fire response was hard to miss for commuters, students, and passersby moving through the busy area.
Not an isolated type of call
The incident mirrors other unusual local calls where someone has climbed a structure and drawn a significant police response. 10News previously covered a Mission Hills billboard standoff that also ended with an arrest. Officials noted that circumstances in such cases can vary widely, and they have not said whether mental health services were involved in the San Diego City College incident.
As of the latest reports, authorities had not explained why the man climbed the tree and had not released any further information on potential charges or hospitalization. The case remains under investigation as officials work to determine what led up to the confrontation.
