Three structure fires in roughly 30 minutes turned a quiet overnight in Charlotte into a fast-moving game of catch-up for fire crews, leaving two homes and another building damaged while investigators work to piece together what happened.
Responders were dispatched to a two-story house in the 1300 block of Sugar Hollow Drive, a house in the 4900 block of Abendego Road, and a single-story building in the 8000 block of Tremaine Court. Officials said crews had the larger Sugar Hollow blaze under control in about 50 minutes and wrapped up the Abendego Road fire in roughly 30 minutes. There were no reported injuries at those first two scenes.
According to Queen City News, roughly 30 firefighters responded to the Sugar Hollow and Abendego Road incidents, moving quickly to knock down the flames and clear the areas. Reporter Abby Mittower notes that investigators are still examining all three locations to determine how the blazes started.
Scenes and response
City officials have spent recent months sounding the alarm about elevated fire risk and active restrictions, and the fire department has been urging residents to skip open burning while conditions stay dry. The City of Charlotte has said a local burn ban and water restrictions are in effect to help protect firefighting resources. The Charlotte Fire Department also notes it operates dozens of stations across the city to keep response times tight when structure fires break out.
Investigation underway
The causes of the Sugar Hollow Drive and Abendego Road fires are still under investigation, and authorities have not yet released a determination about the Tremaine Court blaze, according to Queen City News. Officials are asking anyone with information or footage to contact investigators or use the city's reporting channels.
Neighbors in the affected areas are urged to keep an eye on official updates and follow fire-safety guidance from the Charlotte Fire Department. The department maintains contact information and safety resources on its website at Charlotte Fire, and anyone seeing active smoke or flames should call 911 immediately.
