A vacant one-story house on the 4400 block of North Carpenter Avenue in Studio City went up in flames Friday afternoon, as a fast-moving fire tore through its attic and sent a swarm of firefighters into the Moorpark–Carpenter area.
The blaze was reported just before 5 p.m., and crews zeroed in on knocking down heavy fire in the roof and attic instead of sending firefighters inside the structure. Neighbors in the area watched a sizable emergency response move in as crews worked to contain the incident and secure the scene.
What LAFD Reported
According to LAFD, the incident was logged as Inc#1415 and came in at about 4:55 p.m. The department said the "majority of the fire" was in the attic and that firefighters "are operating in a defensive mode" while they worked to knock the blaze down.
The alert listed units from Fire Station 86 and Battalion 14 of the Valley Bureau, and placed the call within City Council District 2.
Property Background And Next Steps
City Planning records show 4400 N. Carpenter Avenue sits on roughly an 18,399-square-foot lot and has been the subject of a preliminary parcel map to subdivide the site. The staff report notes the previous owner transferred the property and the current owner "has not occupied the Property at all."
Los Angeles City Planning indicates the existing single-family dwelling was slated for demolition as part of that review, which aligns with LAFD's characterization of the structure as vacant.
LAFD's update stated that exposures to neighboring buildings were negated, though the department did not immediately release a cause or provide any update on injuries. Investigators are expected to examine the property once it is fully secured and consider whether the city's planning records or any recent work at the address factor into the probe.
