Just after 12:30 a.m. on July 5, a late-night confrontation near West Waters Avenue turned deadly, Tampa investigators say. Officers were first called to the 8400 block of North Armenia Avenue, where they found a wounded man who had been driven there. He was rushed to a hospital and later pronounced dead.
The driver who fired the shots told police he opened fire only after a man opened the vehicle’s driver-side door while holding a firearm. Detectives say the shooter did not take off, instead staying put and cooperating as they work through often-conflicting witness accounts and physical evidence.
Police timeline and the shooter’s claim
According to the Tampa Free Press, officers were dispatched to the North Armenia Avenue scene just after 12:30 a.m., then later determined the shooting itself happened near the 1800 block of West Waters Avenue. The shooter told investigators that while he was in his parked vehicle, a man walked up, opened the driver’s door, and had a firearm in his hand, at which point the driver fired.
Detectives are now pulling surveillance video, processing shell casings and other physical evidence, and interviewing anyone who might have seen or heard the confrontation to pin down exactly how quickly it unfolded.
“The Tampa Police Department noted that the shooter remained at the scene and is actively cooperating with investigators,” the Tampa Free Press reported. No charges have been filed while detectives sort through witness statements and await forensic results.
Waters Avenue context
W. Waters Avenue has seen a string of recent crashes and violent incidents, stoking neighborhood worries about safety along the busy corridor. A recent Hoodline piece on a hit-and-run that killed a bicyclist highlighted how quickly things can turn tragic and how crucial cameras can be to cracking a case. Local advocates often point out that when incidents play out in a matter of seconds, rapid follow-up and solid public tips are sometimes the only way to fill in the blanks.
Legal notes on self-defense
Florida’s justifiable-use-of-force laws say a person may use deadly force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent imminent death or great bodily harm. The standards and related immunity provisions are laid out in Chapter 776 of state law. Whether a shooting meets that legal threshold is decided only after investigators present their findings to prosecutors and, if needed, during pretrial hearings.
For the full legal framework, see Chapter 776 at the Florida Legislature.
How to help investigators
Investigators are asking anyone who was near West Waters Avenue or North Armenia Avenue around midnight, or who has doorbell, security, or dash-cam video from the area, to get in touch. Tipsters can call Tampa Police detectives at 813-231-6130, according to the City of Tampa, or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-873-TIPS. Police say they will release more information once the investigation moves forward and the victim’s family has been notified.
Detectives continue to canvas nearby businesses and homes for video and eyewitness accounts. As the probe continues, authorities are urging anyone who knows anything about what happened before or after the gunfire to come forward so they can piece together the full story of the midnight ambush.
