A tense traffic stop on San Antonio’s West Side turned into a brief standoff Thursday evening when a driver accused of threatening someone with a gun refused to get out of his vehicle, police said. The incident unfolded near the Cheyenne Village apartments at 147 Cheyenne Street around 6:40 p.m., according to officers at the scene.
How the stop unfolded
Officers were dispatched to 147 Cheyenne Street on a report of a gun disturbance and, while heading to the call, spotted a vehicle that matched the description they had been given, Fox San Antonio reported. Police conducted a felony stop because they believed the driver was armed.
According to Lt. Reyes, the suspect refused to leave the vehicle and told officers “that we’re going to drag him out or shoot him at that time.” Rather than rush in, officers held their position and called for backup. After the standoff stretched on, the man ultimately surrendered on his own, Reyes said.
Local context
San Antonio is no stranger to tense standoffs, although traffic-stop barricades like this are not everyday fare. A 2022 North Side situation that lasted several days ended without injuries, as covered by KSAT, and a separate North Side case in May 2026 also wrapped up with a surrender, according to North Side standoff shocker. Together, those episodes highlight how negotiators and careful tactics can steer even weapon-related calls toward nonviolent outcomes.
In Thursday’s case, San Antonio police described the suspect as about 22 years old and the alleged victim as roughly 25. The incident remains under investigation, and authorities have not yet released the suspect’s name or said whether charges will be filed, according to Fox San Antonio.
