Deputies say an SUV crossed into the oncoming lane around 12:30 a.m. and struck a pickup truck, leaving one driver trapped in the wreckage as several victims were rushed to nearby hospitals.
According to CBS News Detroit, deputies with the Kent County Sheriff's Office arrived on Algoma Avenue NE just south of 15 Mile Road and found the 58-year-old driver trapped in his vehicle. Emergency crews extricated him, and he was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The pickup's driver, a 19-year-old man from Hastings, and five passengers in the truck were transported to area hospitals with injuries reported as ranging from minor to serious.
Investigation underway
Per the Kent County Traffic Safety Unit, investigators from the sheriff's office are leading the inquiry into the collision. Authorities also told WOOD Radio that alcohol is believed to be a factor, and detectives are still working to determine how the SUV ended up driving the wrong way.
