New Orleans is heading into a dangerous Saturday as temperatures climb from the upper 70s to a high near 96 degrees. Early conditions are partly cloudy, but skies should turn mostly sunny through the afternoon. The bigger problem is the humidity, with heat index values expected to reach as high as 112.
Saturday Heat Peaks By Late Afternoon
A Heat Advisory runs from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. Saturday across New Orleans and southeast Louisiana, with the National Weather Service warning that hot temperatures and high humidity could cause heat illness. Northwest winds should stay light near 5 mph, and the rain chance is only about 8%, so most outdoor plans will face heat rather than storms.
Nighttime Relief Will Be Limited
Saturday night should be mostly clear, with a low around 80 degrees and temperatures rising toward 82 overnight. Heat index values could still reach 107, making the evening feel more oppressive than the thermometer suggests. New Orleans residents who need help staying cool can check the city’s Emergency Resource Centers page for locations and services.
Sunday Stays Hot Before Storm Chances Build
Sunday looks sunnier and slightly hotter, with a high near 97 and heat index values up to 109. Monday brings a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1 p.m., followed by similar afternoon storm chances Tuesday and Wednesday. By Thursday, showers and thunderstorms are likely, with a high near 92, while Friday remains warm with additional storm chances.
Heat Safety Matters Saturday
Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioning when possible, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day and take frequent breaks from the sun. The National Weather Service also recommends checking on relatives and neighbors who may be more vulnerable to heat illness. Anyone experiencing confusion, fainting or worsening symptoms should seek immediate medical help.
