A Dallas-based discount beauty chain known for makeup that starts at $1 is opening its first Washington store next month at Alderwood Mall, bringing a mix of vegan skincare, jewelry, and low-cost cosmetics to the Lynnwood shopping hub. Miss A will open its doors at 3000 184th St. SW on September 5, according to co-founder Jean Baik.
Miss A got its start in 2013 when Jean and Kenneth Baik launched it as an e-commerce business, according to WhatNow. Jean Baik moved to Dallas after studying at Parsons School of Design in New York, and the brand now operates more than 80 stores nationwide, selling everything from makeup, eyelashes, and nail products to hair accessories, skincare, spa and body items, and jewelry. The company keeps prices low, per the same report, by sourcing products directly from manufacturers and limiting spending on traditional advertising.
The Lynnwood store won't just be a discount rack — it will also need staff. A retail job listing posted this month shows Miss A offering an annual salary of $54,000 to $58,000, plus performance bonuses and full health benefits, for the Store Manager position at the incoming location, according to Talents by Vaia.
Cruelty-Free Branding Meets State Law
Miss A describes itself as cruelty-free and offers vegan skincare and makeup products, part of a broader identity that includes its in-house label AOA Studio. Through AOA Studio, the company sells a dedicated “Paw Paw” collection that donates a portion of its proceeds to animal rescue and shelter groups, according to Slashed Beauty.
That positioning lines up with a Washington law that took effect at the start of 2025. Under House Bill 1097, codified as RCW 69.05, it is illegal for cosmetics manufacturers to sell or offer products tested on animals in the state, with fines reaching $5,000 per violation, according to the Washington State Legislature.
Part of a Bigger Alderwood Retail Wave
Miss A's arrival adds to a crowded lineup of new tenants filling out Alderwood Mall this fall. Asian department store chain TESO Life announced plans in July for a 25,246-square-foot store at the mall, joining a group of incoming openings that includes Levi's, Supreme Dumplings, Rowan, Moida, and Shoe Palace, according to the Daily Herald. Hoodline has also reported on a screen-free jewelry studio joining the mall's fall roster.
The mall itself has been reshaped in recent years to draw more year-round foot traffic. Spanning 1.5 million square feet with roughly 170 retailers, Alderwood Mall is Snohomish County's largest shopping center, anchored by Nordstrom, Macy's, and JCPenney, according to a LoopNet listing. Mall operator Brookfield Properties partnered with AvalonBay Communities to convert a former Sears space into Avalon Alderwood Place, a two-tower, 328-unit apartment complex completed on mall grounds in 2022, per KING 5.
Transit and Regional Expansion
Regional transit upgrades have also made the mall easier to reach for shoppers across the Puget Sound area. Sound Transit launched service on its 8.5-mile, $3.1 billion Lynnwood Link light rail extension in August 2024, directly connecting south Snohomish County to downtown Seattle in 28 minutes, per Sound Transit.
The Lynnwood store is one piece of a larger multi-state push for Miss A. The company's 2026 store directory shows additional upcoming openings planned for Boise Towne Square in Idaho and Mayfair Mall in Wisconsin, positioning the Washington entry within a broader brick-and-mortar expansion strategy. That growth mirrors a wider trend already visible near Alderwood, where off-price outdoor gear retailer Sierra opened a 22,255-square-foot store across from the mall at Alderwood Plaza in May, as Hoodline previously reported.
