Philadelphia is starting Saturday with temperatures around 72 degrees, clear skies and a light northerly breeze, but the calm will not last all weekend. Sunshine will push the city to a high near 88 degrees before showers and thunderstorms take over Sunday.
Saturday is the better bet for outdoor plans, with only a 5% chance of rain and comfortable humidity by afternoon. According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, skies will turn partly cloudy Saturday night as temperatures settle near 70.
Sunday Brings Heavy Rain And Thunder
Sunday starts with patchy fog between 7 and 8 a.m., followed by a slight chance of showers around midday. The storm threat increases between 2 and 5 p.m., with an 80% chance of precipitation, gusts up to 25 mph and daytime rainfall totals of roughly a quarter- to half-inch.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue Sunday night, when the rain chance rises to 90% and another three-quarters to 1 inch of rain could fall. Forecasters say heavy downpours may create flash-flooding problems, with the heaviest storms potentially producing rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour; isolated damaging wind gusts are also possible, especially south of Philadelphia.
Monday Clears Before More Summer Heat
Monday should turn mostly sunny, though a 30% chance of rain showers remains and the high could reach 87 degrees. Tuesday and Wednesday look quieter and warmer, with sunny skies and highs near 87 to 88 degrees.
Another round of unsettled weather may arrive Thursday, when showers have a 40% chance, followed by a mostly sunny Friday with a high near 84. No watches, warnings or advisories are currently listed for Philadelphia, but residents should avoid flooded roadways Sunday and move indoors promptly when thunder is heard.
