A 40-year-old man was found with multiple stab wounds at Wheeler Park in Linden on Wednesday afternoon, and officers tracked down a suspect near Aviation Plaza. The victim was conscious and alert when first responders arrived, and he remains in stable condition. Police have charged 27-year-old Mark Minotti with attempted murder and several related weapons and assault offenses.
According to a statement from the County of Union, New Jersey, the Union County Police Department was dispatched to Wheeler Park at approximately 1:36 p.m. Wednesday for a report of an aggravated assault. Officers arrived to find the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds near Stiles Street and Route 1/9. Linden Fire Department/EMS personnel and Union County Police provided immediate care at the scene before transporting him to University Hospital-Newark.
The Linden Police Department intercepted a male near Aviation Plaza on Route 1/9 and Stiles Street, according to the same release, and Union County Police then detained him. Investigators say the man, later identified as Minotti, indicated that he had stabbed another man in the park. Minotti was transported to the Union County Police Department, where he was interviewed, processed and charged, and was then transported to Trinitas Hospital.
Charges and What Prosecutors Must Prove
Minotti faces first-degree attempted murder under 2C:5-1/2C:11-3a(1), second-degree aggravated assault under 2C:12-1b(1), aggravated assault with a weapon under 2C:12-1b2, third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose involving a knife under 2C:39-4d, and fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon under 2C:39-5d, per the release. The charges against him remain allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Securing a conviction on the lead charge will not be simple. Under New Jersey appellate case law interpreting 2C:5-1 and 2C:11-3, prosecutors must prove Minotti acted with specific intent to cause death, not merely intent to cause serious bodily injury, according to Fred Sisto Criminal Defense. The stakes are steep if he is convicted. A first-degree attempted murder conviction carries a mandatory 10 to 20 years in state prison, per the Gelman Law Firm, while the second-degree aggravated assault charge alone carries 5 to 10 years and fines up to $150,000, according to Villani & DeLuca, P.C. Investigators believe the attack was a random act carried out by a single actor, based on their investigation so far, according to the county's release. Police have said there is no continuing safety threat to Wheeler Park or the surrounding area. Open questions remain about any relationship between Minotti and the victim before the attack and about what, if anything, prompted it.

Medical Care for Victim and Suspect
The victim was taken to University Hospital-Newark, whose Eric Muñoz Trauma Center is northern New Jersey's only Level I trauma center and operates 24 hours, according to University Hospital Newark. The hospital completed a 14,129-square-foot emergency department expansion with 20 private treatment rooms last September, the hospital says.
Minotti, meanwhile, was brought to Trinitas Regional Medical Center in Elizabeth. The release does not describe any medical evaluation he received there.
