An adult man was hospitalized Friday after a shooting in the 3500 block of McShane Way in Dundalk, according to Baltimore County Police. Investigators say the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under review, and very little information about what led to the gunfire has been made public.
Baltimore County Police confirmed the shooting occurred in the 3500 block of McShane Way, as reported by WBFF. The department said in a post on X that it is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the man was transported to a local hospital. The station's report, authored by Alexa Dikos, notes that reported information surrounding the incident is minimal and that the story will be updated as more details become available.
No details have yet been released about the man's condition, a possible motive, or whether a suspect has been identified. Those questions remain open as the investigation continues.
A Street With a History of Serious Police Encounters
McShane Way has drawn police attention before. In June 2024, officers conducting a traffic stop in the 3300 block of the same street found themselves in a vehicle-dragging incident and an officer-involved shooting attempt, according to Baltimore County Government. That stop led to the recovery of handguns, illegal auto-sear switches, and narcotics, underscoring that the residential corridor has seen serious gun-related incidents before.
The street itself carries a deeper local history. McShane Way was named for the McShane family, whose historic foundry produced bells and ironwork used in landmark buildings and memorial sites nationwide, according to Baltimore Magazine, part of Dundalk's origins as an industrial factory town.
Countywide Violence Trending Down, But Dundalk Still Sees Shootings
The shooting comes even as Baltimore County has reported its lowest violent crime numbers in five years. Homicides fell 49% from 55 in 2021 down to 28 in 2025, while nonfatal shootings dropped 45% over the same period, from 75 down to 41, per the Baltimore Sun. County police also touted strong clearance rates last year, solving 26 of 28 homicides for a 93% clearance rate and 39 of 41 nonfatal shootings for a 95% clearance rate.
Still, densely populated pockets of the county like Dundalk continue to see sporadic gun violence. Dundalk is the largest unincorporated community in Baltimore County, with more than 70,000 residents, which keeps Precinct 12 handling one of the highest call volumes in the county, according to The Herbst Firm. Precinct 12, which covers McShane Way, has been commanded by Captain Matthew Wilking since 2025, following his 17 years in patrol and special response units, per Baltimore County Government.
Community Concerns Have Already Prompted Town Halls
Friday's shooting arrives amid ongoing public dialogue about gun violence in eastern Baltimore County. In July, county officials and police leaders held public safety town halls in the area, meeting directly with residents at CCBC Essex to discuss legal constraints and staffing, as reported by WBFF.
Dundalk has seen a string of shootings investigated by county police in recent months, including a daytime shooting that hospitalized a teen in Avondale and a nighttime shooting that also left a teen wounded. Should a suspect eventually be identified and charged, Maryland law treats any assault committed with a firearm as a first-degree felony under Criminal Law § 3-202, carrying a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison, according to The Cohen Law Firm. Separately, using a firearm during a violent felony carries a mandatory minimum of five years without parole under Criminal Law § 4-204, a sentence that runs consecutive to any underlying charge, per FindLaw.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact Metro Crime Stoppers of Maryland, an independent nonprofit that offers cash rewards up to $2,000 for tips leading to felony charges and arrests, according to Baltimore County Government. Tips can be submitted anonymously by phone at 1-866-7LOCKUP or online.
