A man in his 30s or 40s was stabbed multiple times inside a Northwest Side 7-Eleven late Wednesday while he was simply trying to pay for an item at the counter, and the attacker fled the store and remains on the loose. Police say the victim, first listed in critical condition, has since been upgraded to stable.
The attack happened just before 9:30 p.m. at a 7-Eleven on Fredericksburg Road near Interstate 10, according to WOAI. Police say an agitated man entered the store and attacked the victim, stabbing him multiple times in the neck, back and torso before running off. The station reports the victim was rushed to the hospital and is now recovering.
Other outlets covering the same incident offered additional detail on the scene. According to San Antonio Police Department details reported by KSAT 12, officers responding around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday to the 7-Eleven in the 900 block of Fredericksburg Road found the man, estimated to be between 35 and 40 years old, suffering from stab wounds to his abdomen and back. KENS 5 reported that police responded specifically to the 919 block of Fredericksburg Road after preliminary reports indicated the victim was stabbed from behind while standing at the counter, with the suspect fleeing on foot.
Investigation Still Open, No Suspect Named
The investigation remains ongoing, and the attacker has not been identified or captured. Detectives will likely lean on standard convenience store safety systems as they work the case; research on retail security protocols notes that major chains like 7-Eleven deploy point-of-sale exception reporting alongside high-definition surveillance aimed directly at checkout registers, tools built to help track transactions and assist police investigations, according to a report published on Scholarly Commons. Whether that footage captured a clear image of the fleeing suspect has not been disclosed, and key questions, including the attacker's motive and whether he had any prior contact with the victim before the confrontation at the register, remain unanswered.
If a suspect is eventually identified and charged, the case would likely fall under Texas's aggravated assault statute. Under Texas Penal Code § 22.02, committing assault with a deadly weapon or causing serious bodily injury is classified as a second-degree felony, carrying a punishment range of 2 to 20 years in state prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to FindLaw. Texas law can enhance such charges to a first-degree felony under specific aggravating circumstances.
A Corridor With a History of Violence
This is not the first violent incident along this stretch of Fredericksburg Road. In November 2025, San Antonio police investigated two connected fatal beatings in the nearby Deco District within 800 feet of each other, prompting community vigils, as reported by KENS 5. And back in June 2024, Hoodline detailed a stabbing near Callaghan Road along the same corridor that sent a female victim to the hospital, with police pursuing a suspect who fled the scene.
Citywide Crime Trends Diverge From Local Incidents
The Wednesday night stabbing stands in contrast to broader crime data touted by city officials in recent months. A San Antonio Police Department report presented to the City Council's Public Safety Committee in December showed overall citywide crime dropped 13% in 2025, with violent crime against persons falling 9%, from 31,179 cases in 2024 to 28,361 cases in 2025, according to KSAT. Assault cases specifically fell 9% citywide in 2025 to 26,750 recorded incidents, the same SAPD figures showed.
More recent analysis suggests the decline has continued into this year. A Council on Criminal Justice analysis published in July reported San Antonio homicides dropped an additional 8% during the first half of 2026, following a 2025 UTSA evaluation that found a 21.1% citywide decline in violent street crime under the department's Violent Crime Reduction Plan, according to the San Antonio Report. The city launched its targeted hotspot policing plan in 2023. San Antonio's proposed fiscal year 2026 budget also allocated funding for 25 new patrol officers within SAPD's roughly 2,893 uniformed positions, following calls from Northwest Side leaders for a stronger police presence, per KSAT's earlier reporting on the budget.
For now, the man attacked at the 7-Eleven register is recovering, but the person who stabbed him remains unidentified and unaccounted for. Police have not released a suspect description, and the investigation into what triggered the attack continues.
