A single gunshot cracked through a quiet West Babylon neighborhood Monday afternoon, sending at least one witness scrambling for cover and, moments later, three masked people running from the backyard where it happened. Suffolk County Police say no one was hurt and nothing was damaged, but the daylight shooting near Columbus Avenue and Rutgers Road has left neighbors rattled and detectives searching for answers.
According to News12 Long Island, the shot went off just after 4 p.m. in the backyard of a home on Columbus Avenue. Suffolk County Police are now investigating the gunfire, which occurred in a residential pocket of the hamlet, and officials say the incident caused no injuries and no property damage.
Resident Kristin Ieva told the outlet she initially assumed the noise was a firework before quickly reconsidering. “It sounded different,” Ieva said, describing the moment she heard the shot ring out near her home. Another witness told the station she saw three people run out of the home wearing ski masks immediately after the gunshot, though it remains unclear whether they were connected to whoever fired the weapon or fleeing the scene themselves.
What Detectives Still Need to Figure Out
The case remains under investigation, and several basic details have not been made public. It's unknown whether investigators recovered shell casings or other ballistics evidence in the backyard, whether any nearby home security cameras captured the fleeing trio, or whether the targeted residence had any prior history with law enforcement, according to background compiled on the case.
The Suffolk County Police First Precinct, based at 555 Route 109 in West Babylon, holds primary jurisdiction over the Town of Babylon and is positioned to lead the response to incidents like this one across the hamlet, per the Suffolk County Police Department. If investigators eventually identify a shooter, state law lays out a range of potential charges. Discharging a firearm in a populated residential area can bring second-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, or first-degree reckless endangerment — a Class D felony carrying up to seven years in prison — if prosecutors determine the act showed depraved indifference to human life, according to Stephen Bilkis & Associates. Separately, possessing an unlicensed loaded firearm outside a home or business can qualify as second-degree criminal weapon possession, a violent Class C felony that carries mandatory state prison time under New York law, as outlined by Tilem & Associates.
A Hamlet Already on Edge
West Babylon is the largest hamlet in the Town of Babylon, spanning 7.7 square miles with more than 43,000 residents, and it sits within a town that is the most densely populated in Suffolk County, with over 218,000 residents packed at more than 4,000 people per square mile, according to the Town of Babylon. That density means gunfire in a residential backyard carries an outsized risk of striking a bystander, even when, as in this case, no one was hit.
Monday's incident follows a string of violent episodes that have touched the area in recent months. In January, Suffolk County Police First Squad detectives investigated a backyard shooting in nearby Wyandanch in which a 20-year-old man was critically injured before driving himself to a West Babylon gas station to meet emergency responders, as Hoodline reported at the time. In November, a 15-year-old West Babylon resident was fatally stabbed on Carlton Road after a house party that drew roughly 100 teenagers, a case that led to second-degree murder charges against a 17-year-old suspect. And in May, Suffolk County Police arrested a 25-year-old West Babylon man on second-degree murder and robbery charges tied to a deadly carjacking in neighboring Deer Park.
How Neighbors Can Help
Anyone with information about Monday's shooting is encouraged to come forward, and Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offers confidential cash rewards of up to $5,000 for anonymous tips that lead to an arrest, submitted either by calling 1-800-220-TIPS or through the P3 Tips app, per Suffolk County Crime Stoppers. The organization also runs a separate “fast cash” program that pays tipsters $500 within 72 hours specifically for anonymous information that leads to the seizure of an illegal firearm or an arrest for illegal weapon possession.
For now, the investigation remains open, with detectives working to determine who fired the shot, why, and whether the three masked people seen running from the yard had any role in what happened. No arrests had been announced as of Monday's report.
