Mighty Oak BBQ is making a bigger bet on New Braunfels: the family-owned smokehouse is leaving its small Walnut Avenue home for a larger Porter Street location by early September. The move is expected to add indoor and outdoor seating and tackle a problem familiar to plenty of hungry drivers: parking. The smokers, meanwhile, are expected to keep working through the transition.
According to Community Impact, owner David Stokem said Mighty Oak has outgrown its current location at 1102 N. Walnut Ave. and needs a site with better customer parking. The restaurant is expected to open around September 3 at 560 Porter St. while remaining operational during the move.
A Bigger Home For Mighty Oak’s Distinctive Barbecue
Mighty Oak BBQ’s website says the restaurant smokes its meats over post oak and makes its sides, desserts, sauces and seasoning blends from scratch. Its signature flavor comes from a house spice blend that goes beyond the standard salt-and-pepper approach often associated with Texas barbecue.
The Move Follows A Stretch Of Expansion
The relocation follows a period of growth for the New Braunfels business. MySA reported in October 2025 that Mighty Oak had opened a second food truck at The Weighted Plate on FM 1102, while describing the Walnut Avenue location as a roughly 400-square-foot spot without indoor seating.
The new space is planned to seat about 83 people across indoor and outdoor areas, Community Impact reported. For regulars, the practical upside is straightforward: the restaurant can keep serving while adding room for diners to actually sit down and eat.
The menu is expected to carry over the barbecue staples that helped build the restaurant’s local following. Mighty Oak’s official website highlights brisket sandwiches, pork belly burnt ends, baby back ribs and loaded baked potatoes alongside the restaurant’s homemade sides and sauces.
So this is not a goodbye to the Walnut Avenue smokehouse so much as a move to let the dining room catch up with the demand. New Braunfels barbecue fans can expect a larger setting, better parking and the same locally owned operation during the transition.
