A routine walk at San Antonio's Friesenhahn Park turned into a violent robbery Monday when two men allegedly attacked a woman, demanded money and drove away in her vehicle. She fought back while wearing a 15-pound weight vest and suffered a fractured bone near her elbow, according to her account.
According to KSAT, Irma Hernandez was walking the North Side park's trails when the men pushed her, removed her glasses and began hitting her. She said she carried her wallet, keys and headphones in a pouch attached to the vest, and the attackers used the stolen keys to take her car.
The City of San Antonio lists Friesenhahn Park as a public green space with a 0.54-mile mix of concrete and natural trails, open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. Hernandez said the park had been a familiar place where she went to relax and followed the same route regularly.
Hernandez said the attackers stopped only after one noticed another parkgoer walking a dog nearby. She believes that stranger's presence saved her, and told KSAT, “This was my peace, and they ruined it.”
No Arrests Have Been Announced
San Antonio police said the investigation remains ongoing and no one has been arrested. Investigators used a locator app to track Hernandez's vehicle and recovered it at an apartment complex, while police said there had been no other assault or robbery calls from Friesenhahn Park during the previous six months.
Hernandez hopes sharing the attack will encourage other parkgoers to stay alert, even in places that feel routine and familiar. Her advice is simple: keep an eye on your surroundings and do not let comfort turn into complacency.
