A vehicle fire spread into an apartment building on the 1200 block of South Saltair Avenue in Sawtelle on Friday, prompting the Los Angeles Fire Department to send 94 firefighters to the scene. One adult male suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and crews had the flames knocked down within 31 minutes.
The fire broke out at 1254 S. Saltair Avenue, an 8-unit multi-family apartment building with two-story floor plans and gated parking, according to property records from PadMapper. The blaze started in a vehicle before extending into the residential structure, per an alert from LAFD, which logged the incident as INC#0269. The department advises anyone with an emergency to call or text 911.
Because the flames spread from the vehicle into the building itself, the incident is tracked nationally as a structure fire rather than a vehicle fire, in line with National Fire Protection Association reporting guidelines. Vehicle fires of this kind are common: NFPA research shows mechanical and electrical malfunctions are the leading causes of non-collision highway vehicle fires, with an estimated 200,000 such fires occurring annually across the country. The official cause of the fire at Saltair Avenue remains unconfirmed.
A Major Response for a Westside Block
The response was managed by LAFD's West Bureau and handled by Battalion 9, with Fire Station 19 assigned to the incident. Deploying 94 firefighters for a residential structure fire reflects a major emergency response under LAFD protocols, drawing multiple engine and truck companies to keep flames from spreading across the high-density residential block, according to the department's own operational guidance.
Battalion 9 is headquartered at Fire Station 37 in Westwood and commands seven stations across the Westside, including Stations 19, 23, 37, 59, 69, 71 and 92, per the Community Emergency Response Team network known as CERT-LA. Fire Station 19 itself sits at 12229 West Sunset Boulevard in Brentwood, operating within LAFD's Operations West Bureau to cover West Los Angeles and Sawtelle. Fire Station 59, less than a mile away on West Olympic Boulevard, frequently backs up Westside structural fires as well.
A Recurring Risk in Sawtelle's Dense Housing Stock
The fire falls within Los Angeles City Council District 11, represented by Councilmember Traci Park, who has overseen Westside municipal and public safety priorities since taking office in December 2022. NFPA research on residential fire patterns notes that multi-family buildings account for a notable share of urban structure fires where vehicle fires in parking areas extend into living spaces, underscoring the heightened exposure risk when parked cars sit close to apartment units.
This is not the first time a vehicle-related blaze has threatened a Sawtelle apartment complex. Hoodline previously reported on a Sawtelle garage fire quickly extinguished in January, one of several recent incidents in the neighborhood, including apartment fires reported in May, September and October. The frequency of these calls in the same pocket of West Los Angeles reflects the density challenges facing crews operating out of Battalion 9's seven-station network.
No further details on the extent of damage to the Saltair Avenue building or the condition of the injured man have been released. The cause of the fire remains under review.
