Three men were left in critical condition Tuesday afternoon after a shooting on the 2200 block of Ridge Avenue in North Philadelphia, and as of Tuesday night, no arrests had been made. Police said the gunfire erupted around 4:45 p.m. and that all three victims were rushed to a local hospital.
According to CBS News Philadelphia, the shooting occurred on the 2200 block of Ridge Avenue and left three people critically injured, with police saying all three were taken to a hospital. The outlet, citing reporter Tom Ignudo, described the incident as a developing story that would be updated as more details emerge. 6abc Action News reported that the shooting happened near the intersection with Cecil B. Moore Avenue, a major commercial and transit artery in North Philadelphia, at approximately 4:50 p.m., and that all three injured victims were men.
A Corridor Under the 22nd District's Watch
The 2200 block of Ridge Avenue falls within the jurisdiction of the Philadelphia Police Department's 22nd Police District, which is headquartered at 17th Street and Montgomery Avenue and patrols central North Philadelphia neighborhoods including Sharswood and Strawberry Mansion, per the department's own district listings. Critically wounded shooting victims from this stretch of North Philadelphia are typically transported to nearby Temple University Hospital, located at 3401 North Broad Street, which operates Pennsylvania's busiest Level I Adult Trauma Center for penetrating trauma and gunshot injuries, according to the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation.
Getting victims there quickly often does not involve a traditional ambulance ride. A historical reporting analysis by The Philadelphia Inquirer found that roughly 70 percent of penetrating trauma victims arriving at Temple University Hospital are brought in by police officers conducting so-called “scoop and run” transports or by private vehicles, rather than municipal ambulances, reflecting how often officers move fast when ambulances are delayed.
Citywide Shootings Down, But Multi-Victim Incidents Persist
The Ridge Avenue shooting adds to a year that has otherwise trended toward fewer killings across Philadelphia. As of mid-August, the Philadelphia City Controller's Office had recorded 111 homicides citywide, a 20 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2025, along with 432 total shooting victims — 338 nonfatal and 94 fatal. The Controller's Office also reports that approximately 88 percent of this year's nonfatal shooting victims in Philadelphia have been male, a demographic pattern consistent with Tuesday's three male victims.
Even so, incidents involving multiple victims on a single block continue to unsettle residents of commercial corridors like Ridge Avenue. The block has seen deadly violence before: in June 2019, a 38-year-old woman was shot and killed inside a corner deli on the same stretch, according to FOX 29 Philadelphia.
A Block Balancing Danger and Community Life
Despite that history, the 2200 block of Ridge Avenue also functions as a civic anchor for the Sharswood community. It hosts the annual “Jazzing on Ridge” festival, organized by the Lower North Philadelphia Community Development Corporation, according to Scribe Video Center, underscoring ongoing efforts to revitalize the commercial corridor even as safety concerns persist.
Reward Money and Tip Line Remain Open
With no suspects in custody, investigators are likely to lean on the public for leads. Under Philadelphia Police Department Directive 8.13, the city maintains a standing reward of up to $20,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in a homicide case, and up to $10,000 for shootings that occur within 500 feet of a school, recreation center, or public library. Anyone with information can contact police through the confidential tip line at 215-686-TIPS (8477), which accepts both calls and text messages, according to the City of Philadelphia.
