A 26-year-old Upper Darby woman locked her bedroom door and shoved a king-sized bed against it after letting a friend sleep in her daughter's room early on August 7 — but police say he pushed his way past the barricade anyway and assaulted her twice before dawn. Niquan E. Doster, a 27-year-old Philadelphia man from the 1500 block of North Brown Street, now sits in Delaware County Prison on charges of rape, sexual assault, false imprisonment and related offenses.
According to Delco Times, the woman and Doster had gone out with friends in Philadelphia on the evening of Thursday, August 6. Doster then drove everyone home in the victim's own vehicle at around 3 a.m., dropping people off before the pair ended up at her home on Golf Road in Upper Darby. He reportedly asked to stay the night there rather than travel back to Philadelphia, and she agreed, telling him he could sleep in her daughter's room. Doster allegedly told her he would not be sleeping there.
Police say Doster carried the woman's bag — containing her mobile phone — into the residence with him, then sexually assaulted her. She locked her bedroom door afterward and pushed a king-sized bed against it for protection, according to the report. About 20 minutes later, police allege, Doster forced his way into the room by pushing the bed away from the door and assaulted her a second time that morning.
Victim Fled to a Friend's House
After the second assault, the woman left her own home and went to a friend's house, where she disclosed what had happened, per the Delco Times account. Doster had allegedly told her not to tell anyone. Her mother was contacted afterward, and police were notified of the reported assaults. Officers later returned to the home with the victim, where they observed damage to the bedroom doorknob and found the king-sized bed pushed close to the door — physical details investigators are expected to present as evidence at the upcoming hearing.
The woman was taken to Lankenau Medical Center for evaluation. Under Pennsylvania law, hospital staff are required to notify law enforcement when a patient reports a sexual assault, and regional facilities including Lankenau maintain Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner protocols for forensic evidence collection, according to Villanova University's Title IX Office. Doster was taken into custody without further incident, the Delco Times reported.
Superintendent Calls Attack “Despicable”
Upper Darby Police Superintendent Timothy Bernhardt, who has spent 28 years in law enforcement including 23 years with the department, according to the Upper Darby Police Department, publicly described the assault as “despicable, cowardly and vile.” Bernhardt said the department provided the victim with support and services to begin addressing the trauma. Local resources for survivors include the Delaware County Victim Assistance Center, a nonprofit operating since 1974 that runs a 24-hour crisis hotline, court accompaniment, and free trauma counseling across the county.
The criminal complaint against Doster was filed by Detective Amanda Shephard. He was arraigned before District Judge George B. Dawson, who set bail at 10 percent of $150,000. Pennsylvania Rule of Criminal Procedure 528 allows judicial officers to authorize that 10 percent cash-deposit option, letting defendants secure release by posting a fraction of the total bail directly with the court. Doster did not post the required $15,000, and he remains in custody at Delaware County Prison.
What Comes Next in Court
Doster faces a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 19 before Magisterial District Judge Elysia Mancini Duerr in Havertown. Duerr, elected in 2021, presides over Magisterial District Court 32-2-53, where prosecutors from the Delaware County District Attorney's Office must establish probable cause — pointing to evidence such as the damaged bedroom doorknob and hospital forensic findings — to send the case to the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas. That office runs a dedicated Special Victims Unit that prosecutes sexual assault and domestic violence cases across the county's 49 municipalities.
Under Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes Title 18, Section 3121, rape is a first-degree felony carrying a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in state prison. Sexual assault, defined under Section 3124.1 as nonconsensual sexual intercourse, is a second-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of as much as $25,000. It remains unclear whether Doster has secured legal counsel ahead of the hearing, or how the defense will respond to the allegations once proceedings begin.
The case adds to a string of violent crime stories out of Upper Darby this year, including a fatal stabbing on State Road. Even so, the department's 2025 Annual Report noted an overall decline in violent crime townshipwide, including drops in reported sex crimes, assaults and robberies, and cited its Real-Time Crime Center and specialized detective units as part of that effort. Bernhardt previously led another high-profile sex crime investigation in 2021, following a widely covered attack at the 69th Street Terminal, according to FOX 29 Philadelphia.
