A 30-year-old Toledo, Ohio, man remained in critical condition yesterday after losing control of his pickup truck and slamming into a tree on a rural road in Monroe County's Whiteford Township. The crash happened just before 3 a.m. as the man drove a gray 2002 Ford F-350 northbound on Whiteford Road, north of Whiteford Center Road, according to investigators. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in the crash, officials said.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office identified the driver as Logan T. Wolfe. According to CBS News Detroit, Wolfe drove off Whiteford Road before his truck struck a tree in Whiteford Township. As reported by The Blade, Wolfe was transported by Monroe Community Ambulance to ProMedica Toledo Hospital in Toledo, where he remained in critical condition Saturday.
Truck Ran Off Roadway Before Impact
Investigators say the truck ran off the roadway to the east before striking the tree, a collision that deployed the vehicle's airbags. Wolfe was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the sheriff's office. Officials believe the combination of the safety equipment likely kept the crash from being immediately fatal.
Emergency responders at the scene included Monroe Community Ambulance, the Whiteford Township Fire Department, and the Bedford Township Fire Department. The sheriff's office assigned the investigation to Deputy Sheriff Melissa Henderson and its Traffic Services Division. The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is investigating the collision and has not indicated whether charges will be filed while the inquiry continues.
Potential Charges Under Michigan Law
If alcohol is confirmed as a factor once toxicology results are complete, Wolfe could face charges under Michigan's operating-while-intoxicated statute, MCL 257.625. A standard first-offense OWI is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail, fines between $100 and $500, up to 360 hours of community service, and six points on a driving record, per the Michigan Legislature. Because Wolfe suffered serious injuries in the crash, investigators could also examine felony provisions under MCL 257.625(4), which makes operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing serious impairment of a body function punishable by up to five years in prison and fines between $1,000 and $5,000.
