A murder case tied to the 2023 killing of Jackson High School teacher Alyson Doulos has ground to a halt in Washtenaw County Circuit Court, stalled by a legal fight over whether deputies had the right to walk into her Ypsilanti Township apartment without a warrant. Charles Gamez, the 44-year-old boyfriend accused of killing the 48-year-old Doulos, is now waiting on the Michigan Court of Appeals to decide whether the evidence gathered at the scene can even be used against him.
The pause traces back to a July 16 order, when Washtenaw County Judge Carol Kuhnke granted a stay in the case, according to MLive. Kuhnke had already denied Gamez's motion to suppress evidence collected at the scene, a motion his attorney filed in March 2025, but the stay froze the underlying murder case while the appellate court reviews that ruling. Per the same report, the Michigan Court of Appeals has not said when it will rule.
Doulos was found dead on March 13, 2023, inside an apartment in the 5000 block of Bosuns Way in Ypsilanti Township, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office, which located her body after responding to a welfare check. Family members had reported that she missed repeated phone calls and had raised concerns about possible domestic abuse in her relationship, according to a prosecutor's filing cited by the outlet. Deputies obtained a key to the apartment from the management company before entering, and then withdrew to request a search warrant once they found her body.
The Fourth Amendment Fight Over That Entry
Gamez's appeal centers on whether deputies were legally allowed inside the apartment before securing a warrant. His attorney argued that the emergency-aid doctrine did not authorize police to enter the home, and that officers made no effort to determine whether anyone inside actually needed emergency help. The defense also pointed out there was no formal missing persons report on file, arguing that undercuts any claim of an urgent, life-threatening situation.
That argument rests on real constitutional footing. Under the 1993 Michigan Supreme Court decision in People v. Davis, police reliance on the emergency-aid exception to justify a warrantless entry requires an objectively reasonable belief, grounded in specific and articulable facts, that someone inside needs immediate assistance, according to Justia Law. A separate, related federal standard came out of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2009 ruling in Michigan v. Fisher, which held that officers do not need ironclad proof of an emergency, only an objectively reasonable basis to enter and render aid or prevent serious injury, per Wayne County Defender Training materials used in Michigan suppression hearings.
If the appellate court sides with Gamez, prosecutors could lose access to key physical evidence gathered at the apartment, effectively gutting the case built around that scene. If the court affirms Kuhnke's ruling, the murder case returns to circuit court, though the outlet notes it is unclear exactly when proceedings would resume.
Additional Charge and a Prior Conviction
Beyond the open murder count, Gamez was arraigned in March 2023 on a separate felony charge of unlawfully driving away an automobile, with court records indicating the alleged offense took place on March 11, 2023, two days before Doulos's body was discovered, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Public criminal records reviewed by advocacy group Men Stopping Violence indicate Gamez had previously served prison time in Michigan following a 2016 conviction on the same charge, with a release date in June 2020.
An autopsy determined Doulos died by strangulation, and findings also indicated she suffered blunt force trauma to the head, according to the Ann Arbor Observer. The Bosuns Way address carries its own grim history: the same block at Schooner Cove Apartments was the site of a fatal shooting in November 2010 that led to a second-degree murder plea, per The Ann Arbor News.
A Teacher Remembered as Beloved by Students
Doulos taught 10th- and 11th-grade English at Jackson High School since 2020, and also served as the school's National Honor Society adviser while assisting students at JPS' South Central Michigan Virtual School and providing after-school tutoring. Jackson Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Kriss Gianetti publicly described her as beloved by her students in the wake of her death, telling WKHM the district was deeply shaken by the loss.
A community memorial service for Doulos was held on March 20, 2023, one week after her body was found, as Jackson High School adopted the rallying phrase “We are Viking Strong” to support grieving students and staff, the station reported. The case remains one marker in a county that recorded 10 homicides in 2024, six of them in Ypsilanti Township, a decline from the 23 homicides recorded countywide in 2023, according to WEMU. For now, the underlying question of Gamez's guilt or innocence remains untouched, waiting on appellate judges to first settle whether the evidence against him can be used at all.
