An 83-year-old Sturgeon Bay woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle while crossing State Highway 57 in the Town of Sevastopol Monday evening. Erika May was crossing the highway eastbound toward a parking lot when a northbound 2025 Chrysler Pacifica struck her, according to Door County Daily News.
The Door County Sheriff's Office was notified of the crash at approximately 7:53 p.m., per the same report. May was transported to Door County Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The Pacifica was being driven by a 72-year-old woman from Ferndale, Washington; neither she nor her three passengers were injured, the outlet's report notes.
Highway Shut Down for Hours as Investigators Worked the Scene
Highway 57 between County Road P and the middle split of state highways 42 and 57 was closed for several hours while authorities investigated, with traffic detoured around the scene, according to the same account. The Door County Sheriff's Office was assisted at the scene by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Sturgeon Bay Fire Department, Sevastopol Emergency Medical Responders, and Door County Emergency Services. The sheriff's office said the crash remains under investigation and that no further information is being released at this time.

Monday's fatality followed a deadly crash on Highway 57 in Sevastopol earlier in 2026. On February 6, a 23-year-old Egg Harbor man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on the highway when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a utility pole just north of the Highway 42/57 split, according to the Door County Pulse.
The pattern of visitors and out-of-town drivers being involved in serious Door County crashes fits a broader trend documented by county officials. An August 2025 traffic safety report found that 49% of motor vehicle crashes in Door County involve drivers who reside outside the county, an unusually high share compared to most Wisconsin municipalities, per the same publication's mid-year crash report.
