A 30-year-old Seaside man died after being stabbed early Sunday on Castroville's main commercial strip, and Monterey County sheriff's investigators have since arrested a 28-year-old Monterey man they identified as a suspect in the killing. Robert Lee Jeffrey was taken into custody without incident Sunday evening, and he now faces a murder charge with bail set at $1.02 million.
Deputies were called to the area of Merritt and Preston streets in Castroville just after 2 a.m. Sunday, according to CBS News, after a man was found suffering from an apparent stab wound. That man was later identified by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office as Fernando Flores Ruiz of Seaside, according to a Monterey Bay Crime/Emergency Facebook post. Flores Ruiz was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Emergency responders provided care before Flores Ruiz was transported. During that chaotic scene, an adult man was reportedly arrested for interfering with emergency personnel. The man's possible involvement in the stabbing was not established in the available reports.
Suspect Tracked Down Hours Later in Monterey
Investigators arrested Jeffrey later that day on Hannon Avenue in Monterey at approximately 5 p.m. Sunday. He was booked into Monterey County Jail on suspicion of murder under California Penal Code Section 187(a), the statute defining murder as the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought.
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has not said what investigators believe led to the stabbing, nor has it said whether Jeffrey and Flores Ruiz knew each other, CBS News reports. A county patrol-log entry lists Jeffrey as arrested in the county.
Witnesses Describe Men Fleeing the Scene
Sheriff's investigators reported that four men wearing dark clothing were seen running eastbound on Preston Street immediately after the stabbing, according to Cedar News. It remains unclear whether any of those men face criminal liability in connection with the case, and the sheriff's office has not said whether they are considered witnesses, suspects, or unrelated bystanders.
Detective Jesus Reyes is listed as a contact for homicide information, and the sheriff's office is asking residents and businesses along Merritt and Preston streets to review surveillance and doorbell-camera footage for potential evidence. Detectives are also asking anyone who witnessed or heard anything in that area early Sunday morning to come forward, per CBS News.
A Commercial Strip With a Recent History of Violence
Merritt Street has a shopping center and shopping area, and it's not the first time this year that sheriff's deputies have investigated serious violence there. In May, Hoodline reported on a strangling case along the same strip that led to an attempted murder and human trafficking arrest.
