A 17-year-old from Fredericktown died at the scene Thursday morning after their Mazda 6 collided with a pickup truck at a stop sign in Harmony Township, Morrow County. The teen was driving westbound on Township Road 187 around 7 a.m. when they failed to yield and pulled into the path of a northbound 2020 Chevrolet Silverado, according to state troopers.
The Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol identified the pickup's driver as 31-year-old Hunter Steck of Marengo, as reported by myfox28columbus.com. After the impact, both vehicles left the west side of County Road 170 and came to rest in a ditch. Steck sustained only minor injuries, while the teen driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Both occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Emergency crews that responded to the crash included Morrow County EMS, the Morrow County Sheriff's Office, Big Walnut Fire Department, Morrow County Fire Department, the Morrow County Coroner, and Bill's Towing, according to Knox Pages. Morrow County EMS personnel pronounced the teenager dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the juvenile's identity, and the crash remains under active investigation by the Mount Gilead Post.
A Common but Deadly Violation at Rural Intersections
Under Ohio Revised Code Section 4511.43(A), drivers approaching a stop sign are required to come to a complete stop and yield the right-of-way to any vehicle on an intersecting road close enough to pose an immediate hazard. Failing to yield at a stop sign is enforced in Ohio as a traffic misdemeanor. The Mazda failed to yield and was struck at the intersection of County Road 170 and Township Road 187.
Drivers aged 15 to 24 were involved in 154,363 traffic crashes statewide between 2023 and 2024, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. In Thursday's crash, the Mazda failed to yield and was struck at the intersection.
Seat Belts Worn, Unlike Most Teen Fatalities
Seat-belt use was reported for both drivers in Thursday's crash. The teen driver and Steck were both wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Another Fatal Crash in a County Already Grieving Teen Drivers
Another Fatal Crash in Morrow County Morrow County has recorded fatal crashes in recent years. The Mount Gilead Post has handled several fatal incidents involving young drivers in the past year alone.
Just over eight months ago, a 14-year-old Bellville boy died and a 16-year-old Galion boy suffered serious injuries when their vehicle left a rural Morrow County roadway on New Year's Eve, a crash also investigated by troopers from the Mount Gilead Post. In February, a 10-year-old girl and a Mount Gilead man were killed in another fatal two-vehicle collision on County Road 25. Thursday's crash adds another name to a list of young lives lost on the county's rural roads this year, with investigators still working to determine the full circumstances behind the fatal encounter at County Road 170 and Township Road 187.
