Robert Earl Keen will headline Longhorn City Limits on Saturday, Sept. 12, just hours before No. 5 Texas hosts No. 1 Ohio State at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in what's shaping up as one of the biggest home dates on the Longhorns' 2026 schedule. Keen is scheduled to take the stage at 4:30 p.m. on the LBJ Lawn, giving fans a live music send-off before kickoff against the top-ranked Buckeyes.
The free concert series opens to the public at 2 p.m. Saturday, according to KVUE. Austin-based swamp funk and soul outfit Shinyribs takes the stage around 3 p.m. to warm up the crowd, with additional Austin musicians also slated to perform. The nine-piece band was formed in 2007 by frontman Kevin Russell, who previously led the Austin group The Gourds, and it was named Best Austin Band at the Austin Music Awards in both 2017 and 2018, according to information compiled on the band's Wikipedia page.
There's an irony baked into the day's headliner. Keen graduated from Texas A&M University in 1978, where he roomed with fellow songwriter Lyle Lovett and co-wrote “The Front Porch Song” before launching a four-decade Americana career, according to The Kerr County Lead. Longhorn City Limits also offers food and drinks for purchase throughout the day, including a satellite location for Houston-founded Pinkerton's BBQ, which has landed on Texas Monthly's “Top 50 BBQ Joints” list continuously from 2017 through 2025, according to University of Texas Athletics.
After the final whistle, the celebration continues: UT Austin officials said a postgame silent disco will bring three DJs to the LBJ Lawn. The stadium itself has an official seating capacity of 100,119, ranking as the seventh-largest college football stadium in the country and the largest in the Southwest, though the venue's all-time attendance record of 105,215 was actually set during the October 2024 matchup against No. 5 Georgia, according to the Houston Chronicle.
A Growing Gameday Tradition On The LBJ Lawn
Longhorn City Limits launched on the LBJ Lawn in September 2018, and it has since hosted more than 80 musical acts across eight seasons as Texas Athletics works to fold Austin's live-music identity into home football weekends, according to details published by University of Texas Athletics. Blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughan headlined the series' debut back on Sept. 8, 2018. Retailer Hollister Co. became the presenting sponsor under a multi-year deal signed with Texas Athletics last September, a partnership that kicked off with an on-campus student event called the Hollister Feel Good Fest.
Saturday's Robert Earl Keen show follows Eli Young Band, which headlined the season's first Longhorn City Limits concert on Sept. 5, and comes on the heels of Hoodline's report that Chris Stapleton's free UT concert drew crowds limited mostly to ticket holders. Organizers have not yet announced performers for the rest of the season, per KVUE. Texas's home schedule continues after the Ohio State game with matchups against UTSA on Sept. 19, Mississippi State on Oct. 31, Ole Miss on Oct. 24, Florida on Oct. 17, and Arkansas on Nov. 21, all at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
