A 25-year-old cyclist is dead after a driver struck him at West 25th Street and Detroit Avenue in Cleveland and then ran off on foot, leaving behind the black Ford F-150 pickup truck involved in the crash. Cleveland EMS rushed the man to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to Cleveland police.

Truck Abandoned, Driver Nowhere to Be Found

The crash happened just before 5 p.m. on October 8, when the driver of the F-150 struck the bicyclist near the busy Ohio City intersection, as reported by Cleveland 19 News. Police recovered the pickup truck right at the scene, but the driver was already gone by the time officers arrived. Cleveland's Accident Investigation Unit is now asking anyone who recognizes the suspect in released surveillance photos, or who has any information about the crash, to come forward.

Investigators have a tool most hit-and-run cases don't: a vehicle left behind. According to WKYC, detectives released surveillance images of the suspect and are directing tips to the Accident Investigation Unit at 216-623-5295. The station's report notes that the unit typically works alongside the city's Real Time Crime Center, cross-referencing abandoned vehicle registration records and street-level surveillance cameras to track down drivers who flee crash scenes, often canvassing nearby commercial corridors for footage.

A Dangerous Corner With a Long History

West 25th and Detroit Avenue sits at a critical junction linking the Ohio City and Hingetown neighborhoods to the Detroit-Superior Bridge and downtown Cleveland, and it has seen its share of serious collisions. On January 26, a Cleveland police cruiser responding to an emergency call collided with an eastbound RTA bus at that same intersection, injuring two officers and a bus passenger, per the same WKYC account. In July 2024, an officer was hospitalized there after being struck by a fleeing off-road rider during an attempted crackdown on reckless dirt bikes near the bridge, a clash that ended with a 29-year-old suspect arrested.

Legal and traffic safety analyses from the Joseph Law Group identify the intersection as a high-friction area prone to right-hook and turning collisions between drivers and cyclists. Cleveland recorded 603 people struck by vehicles in 2024, up from 550 the year before.

Cleveland’s Vision Zero Commitment

Cleveland made a Vision Zero commitment in 2022, with a goal of eliminating all traffic deaths and severe injuries on city streets by 2032.

This is the latest in a string of severe crashes along the Detroit Avenue corridor. Hoodline previously reported on a critically hurt motorcyclist thrown from his bike near Detroit Avenue and West Boulevard in September, and on an East Side hit-and-run in August that also left a driver at large. For now, the driver who left the scene at West 25th and Detroit remains unidentified, and police are relying on the public to help close that gap.
