A Detroit teenager accused of leading Warren police on a high-speed chase that killed a 48-year-old driver has been bound over to Macomb County Circuit Court, where he is scheduled to be arraigned. Deyarin Jamire Marsh, who was 17 at the time of the June crash, confirmed six felony counts during a district court appearance this week before his case was sent up to Macomb County Circuit Court.
Charges Span Murder to Fleeing Police
Marsh appeared Monday before 37th District Court Judge Suzanne Faunce, who bound him over on all six charges, according to MLive. The counts include felony murder, second-degree murder, first-degree fleeing a police officer, failure to stop at the scene of a crash, receiving and concealing stolen property in a motor vehicle, and assault, resisting or obstructing a police officer. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Macomb County Circuit Court before Judge James Biernat Jr. on December 7 at 1:30 p.m.
Prosecutors say Marsh fled from Warren officers who tried to stop a 2014 Dodge Ram he was driving, then disregarded multiple traffic-control devices before slamming into a vehicle stopped at a red light on Schoenherr Road while heading south, per the same account. The driver of that stopped vehicle, 48-year-old Detroit resident Remious Washington, was taken to a Detroit hospital and later died from his injuries.
Victim Was Minutes From Home, Pulling Over for Sirens
Washington was only six minutes from his house and had pulled his car to the right to clear the lane for approaching police sirens when the fleeing truck struck him at 8 Mile and Schoenherr roads on June 18, according to ClickOnDetroit. His family has remembered him as an anchor for their household.
The initial stop began near Fairfield and Georgiana streets around 1:58 a.m. that night, after Warren officers spotted a burnt-out headlight and multiple occupants wearing ski masks inside a pickup truck, as reported by C & G Newspapers. The area had seen upwards of 17 reports of attempted car thefts, thefts and break-ins in the 48 hours before the chase. The truck itself, a 2014 Dodge Ram, had been reported stolen from the Grosse Pointe area and carried five juveniles aged 11 to 17, including Marsh, as detailed by ClickOnDetroit.
Seven-Minute Pursuit Topped 89 MPH
Police dashcam video and department statements released days after the crash showed the pursuit lasted roughly seven minutes along southbound Schoenherr Road toward 8 Mile Road, with speeds reaching 89 mph before the collision, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Warren police leadership maintained that officers acted within department policy in trying to address the neighborhood crime spree. Washington's family questioned the pursuit, and his sister criticized the officers' decision, the station reported.
Four younger passengers in the stolen truck — aged 11, 14, and two 15-year-olds — were arrested and charged separately as juveniles in Macomb County Juvenile Court with felony offenses tied to auto theft and resisting police, per ClickOnDetroit. Marsh was the only occupant prosecuted as an adult.
Zero-Tolerance Policy and Steep Penalties
The case arrives amid a crackdown Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido launched in June 2025, eliminating plea bargains for fleeing-and-eluding suspects after county data showed police pursuits nearly doubled from 226 in 2019 to 403 in 2024, according to ClickOnDetroit's earlier reporting. Separately, first-degree fleeing and eluding under MCL 750.479(5) is punishable by up to 15 years in prison, a $15,000 fine, and mandatory license revocation when the eluding results in a death, according to Bondy Law, PLLC.
