A passenger van carrying multiple occupants flipped onto its side at the intersection of NC Highway 210 and Old Stage Road in Harnett County on Saturday night after colliding with a Honda, killing one person and leaving eight others injured. Emergency crews arrived to find passengers trapped inside the overturned van and declared a mass casualty event as they worked to extricate the victims.
According to ABC11, the crash claimed one life and injured eight others in the collision between the van and the Honda. A separate account of the same incident, relayed via The Daily News Now, also reported one person killed and eight hurt.
All eight surviving victims were transported to WakeMed in Raleigh, while troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol opened a formal investigation into the crash, per the same account. WakeMed's Raleigh campus serves as the region's primary Level I Trauma Center, providing round-the-clock surgical and critical care for mass-casualty patients pulled from rural crash scenes across Harnett County, according to the Wake County EMS System. The exact sequence that caused the van to overturn, the identities and conditions of those involved, and whether speed or alcohol played a role remain open questions, and it is not yet known whether the Highway Patrol will file charges.
A Corridor With a Troubled History
Saturday night's wreck adds to a string of serious crashes along NC Highway 210 and the surrounding Harnett County road network. Hoodline previously reported on a head-on crash on U.S. 401 near Ballard Road in August that killed a 35-year-old man and left a 17-year-old girl badly hurt, with the injured teen also taken to WakeMed's trauma unit. In March 2023, a fatal crash on the same highway led a Harnett County Sheriff's deputy to plead no contest in May 2025 to misdemeanor death by vehicle after driving 77 mph through a red light during a chase and striking another vehicle, according to the JoCo Report.
State enforcement has also stepped in when crashes in the county turned deadly. North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement agents charged four bar employees in February after investigating a separate Harnett County collision that killed three people and critically injured a fourth, according to the North Carolina Department of Public Safety. That case, along with a fatal NC-87 crash in February that killed three people including Fort Bragg soldiers, underscores how often multi-fatality wrecks have drawn state-level scrutiny in the county this year.
Crash Data in Harnett County
Official state data shows Harnett County logged 31 fatal crashes resulting in 36 deaths in 2024, along with 685 non-fatal injury crashes causing 1,071 injuries, according to Connect NCDOT's crash facts report.
Hoodline also covered a motorcycle crash on U.S. 401 near Banks Road in Fuquay-Varina earlier this month that killed one person and injured another, though investigators had not determined whether the person killed was riding the motorcycle or driving the other vehicle.
