Why Deputies Could Give Chase
Washington's Initiative 2113, which took effect in June 2024, changed the rules governing police pursuits. The law allows officers to pursue when they have reasonable suspicion of a law violation and believe the driver poses a threat to public safety. The earlier rules limited pursuits to cases involving probable cause of violent crimes.
Initiative 2113 changed Washington's pursuit rules. In an August Spanaway pursuit, a Glock fitted with a full-auto switch was found. The vehicle in that case was impounded pending a search warrant.
