A man was shot in the leg early Friday during what witnesses described to police as an accidental shooting at a gathering inside a home on Pittsburgh's Auburn Street. Zone 5 officers responded around 2:15 a.m. to the 100 block, found the man wounded, and applied a tourniquet at the scene before medics arrived to take him to the hospital.
According to Pittsburgh Police
, officers located the adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg upon arriving at the residence. The department said officers applied the tourniquet at the scene until medics could get there, and the injured man was then transported to the hospital. Police reported that he was in stable condition following the shooting.
Witnesses Call Shooting Accidental
Individuals who were present at the scene told officers the shooting occurred accidentally during a gathering at the home, per the department's account. That characterization comes from the people who were there at the time, as relayed by police, and has not been independently confirmed beyond that attribution. No further detail on how the shooting happened has been released.
A crime scene unit processed the location overnight, and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police said the investigation remains ongoing. No additional information about the identity of the injured man, a possible shooter, or any weapon recovered from the scene has been made public.
Part of a Mixed Year for Gun Violence Citywide
The Auburn Street shooting adds to a year that has already seen gun violence trend in different directions across the city and county. Pittsburgh has recorded 25 homicides so far in 2026, compared with 20 at the same point last year, according to CBS Pittsburgh. Countywide, including the city, Allegheny County has logged 50 homicides this year versus 66 across the county last year, the outlet reported.
Despite the city's uptick compared with last year, the station noted that 2026's homicide figures for Pittsburgh and Allegheny County mark the second-lowest total since 2018. That broader context does not change the facts of Friday's shooting, which police continue to investigate as a nonfatal case involving a gunshot wound to the leg.
No charges or arrests connected to the Auburn Street incident have been announced. Anyone with information has not yet been given a specific tip line in the department's public statement, and police have not said when the investigation might conclude.
