A woman was found shot to death inside a home in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana, early Thursday morning, according to police, who are still working to identify a suspect or motive in the killing. Officers responded to the 1400 block of Jourdan Road around 6:32 a.m. after a call came in reporting an unclassified death, only for the case to be reclassified hours later as a homicide.
According to WGNO, officers found an unresponsive woman inside the residence, and EMS pronounced her dead at the scene. As reported by NOLA.com, the New Orleans Police Department said the woman was killed by a gunshot, and investigators are now treating her death as a homicide.
Police have not released the woman's identity, and no arrests have been announced. The department said it is gathering evidence to identify the person responsible and establish a motive, and added that no additional information was immediately available, per NOLA.com's reporting.
A Rare Lower Ninth Ward Case Amid a Historic Citywide Drop
The shooting stands out in a year that has otherwise seen New Orleans trending toward one of its safest stretches in decades. The city is on pace to record its lowest number of murders since at least the 1960s, according to crime analyst Jeff Asher, as cited by Axios. The outlet reported that New Orleans had logged 33 homicides so far in 2026, down from 39 at the same point the previous year.
That decline extends beyond homicides. Police data shows ongoing drops in carjackings, nonfatal shootings, rapes and sexual assaults, and robberies over at least the past three years, the same report notes, even as calls for service to police have stayed roughly flat since mid-2022.
A Prior Body Discovery in the Lower Ninth Ward
In January 2020, a slaying victim’s body was found inside a burned car near the Industrial Canal levee in the Lower Ninth Ward area.
No connection between that 2020 case and Thursday's shooting has been established, and the circumstances remain under investigation. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward as NOPD continues piecing together what led to the woman's death inside the Jourdan Road home.
