An early-morning police chase that started outside Pittsburgh city limits came to a violent stop in North Oakland, where the fleeing vehicle slammed into a police cruiser and a nearby smoke shop at the corner of Centre Avenue and North Craig Street. Multiple people were taken into custody, and no officers were reported injured.
The pursuit began outside city limits in the eastern suburbs before winding its way into the city, according to WTAE. As the chase neared its end in North Oakland, a Pittsburgh police cruiser was struck by the suspect's vehicle just as an officer attempted to lay down a spike strip, the station reports. The crash left visible damage to both the cruiser and the smoke shop nearby, and CBS News Pittsburgh captured video of the aftermath.
Multiple Agencies Converge on the Scene
Officers from the Wilkinsburg and Churchill police departments also responded to the crash site, where multiple people were taken into custody, per the station's report. Investigators said there were no injuries to officers, though the exact number of people detained and any charges against them have not been disclosed in available reporting.
The smoke shop itself has not been publicly identified by name, and it remains unclear how much damage the business sustained beyond what was described as damage to the storefront. The same account notes that details about the suspect vehicle, including its make or driver, have not been released.
A Pattern of Pursuits Across Pittsburgh
This chase follows a string of recent pursuit incidents that have put Pittsburgh police under scrutiny. In August, the city's police chief issued a warning to officers about vehicle pursuits after a lawsuit was filed over one chase and an internal audit turned up a string of policy violations, according to WPXI. That audit found officers pursuing vehicles without sufficient justification, failing to activate emergency lights during unauthorized pursuits, deactivating in-car and body-worn cameras, and in one case intentionally striking another vehicle, the station reported.
WPXI also pointed to a separate East End pursuit in which a suspect fleeing a traffic stop for tinted windows slammed into multiple vehicles, injuring nine people. In another case on the North Side, a fleeing driver lost control and struck a residence in the 1900 block of North Charles Street, with two of three suspects caught after short foot chases while a third remained at large, according to CBS News Pittsburgh's coverage of that incident.
Statewide Pursuit Numbers Add Context
Pennsylvania's Vehicle Code requires police departments statewide to record every vehicle pursuit and report it to the Pennsylvania State Police, which compiles the data into an annual summary, according to the Pennsylvania Police Pursuit Reporting System. A snippet from the state's 2023 annual report indicates officers statewide reported 2,958 pursuits that year, with 15 people killed in pursuit-related crashes, all of them violators — though that figure comes from limited source material and has not been independently confirmed against the full report.
No determination has been made public about the cause of the North Oakland pursuit or whether any charges have been filed in connection with it. For now, the damaged cruiser and smoke shop stand as the most visible evidence of a chase that started miles away in the eastern suburbs and ended on a quiet North Oakland corner.
