A pedestrian died early Saturday morning after being struck in a crash involving a semi tractor-trailer on southbound Interstate 15 near downtown Las Vegas, triggering a full closure of the freeway's southbound lanes at Charleston Boulevard. The crash happened at 1:16 a.m. in the Neon Gateway area, and the adult pedestrian died at the scene.
Nevada Highway Patrol said the crash involved a semi tractor in tow with a trailer and a pedestrian, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. All southbound I-15 travel lanes were closed at I-15 and Charleston as troopers worked the scene, with traffic diverted off onto the I-15/Charleston off-ramp. The newspaper's report said the on-ramp at that interchange would remain closed during the investigation.
In a separate Saturday-night incident, all travel lanes were closed, drivers were diverted off the freeway at Blue Diamond Road, and all lanes eventually reopened, KTNV reported in a November 12, 2023, story about a crash at Charleston.
Investigation Still in Its Early Hours
The crash investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not released the pedestrian's identity or detailed how the person came to be on the freeway. The driver's condition and whether any citations have been issued have also not been disclosed in available reporting.
This is not the first time a pedestrian has died after being struck by a semi on I-15 through the Las Vegas valley. In 2024, one person was killed in a crash involving a pedestrian and a semi-tractor trailer on northbound I-15 between Russell Road and Tropicana Avenue, per 8 News Now. In that incident, the far-left northbound lanes reopened by 10:30 p.m. while both far-right lanes stayed closed well into the night.
A similar fatality occurred in October 2022, when a pedestrian was struck and killed on southbound I-15 at Flamingo Road. That collision was reported around 3:10 a.m. and involved several vehicles, including a semi-truck, according to News 3 Las Vegas.
Fatalities Trending Down, but Still Mounting
Saturday's death comes even as early state data points to a drop in traffic deaths across Nevada this year. The state recorded 230 traffic fatalities from January through August 2026, an 11.88% decrease from the same stretch in 2025, according to a report cited by FOX5 Vegas. Pedestrian deaths statewide over that same period totaled 63, down 3.08% from 65 a year earlier.
Clark County has driven much of that improvement. The county recorded 92 traffic fatalities in the first half of 2026, down 32.85% from 137 during the same months in 2025, and pedestrian deaths there fell from 44 to 28, the Las Vegas Sun reported. Statewide, pedestrian fatalities fell from 52 in the first half of 2025 to 43 in the first half of 2026, part of an overall decline from 200 traffic deaths to 167 over that span, per the Sun's analysis.
Those figures remain preliminary, but they align with Nevada's 2026-2030 Strategic Highway Safety Plan, which sets a target of cutting fatal and serious-injury crashes by 35% by 2035, with a long-term goal of zero traffic deaths statewide by 2050, according to the same Las Vegas Sun report. Saturday's death on I-15 is a reminder that the goal remains far from reality for drivers and pedestrians sharing the valley's busiest freeways.
