A 58-year-old woman has died after a truck struck her while she was riding an e-bike in the 500 block of Welty Avenue in Rockford, Illinois, on Tuesday morning. She was initially rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries before police announced hours later that she had died.
The crash was reported around 10:15 a.m., according to rockfordnewsfirst.com, which reported that the woman was riding an e-bike when the truck hit her. Rockford police, in an earlier statement reported by MyStateline, said she was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries after the crash on the stretch of Welty Avenue that runs between East State Street and Rural Street.
Rockford News First reported that police posted an update just before 3 p.m. confirming the woman had died from her injuries. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, according to a separate account from Yahoo News.
A City Already Grappling With a Decade of Deadly Crashes
The fatal crash lands as Rockford is in the middle of a yearlong effort to confront a troubling pattern on its streets. The city’s Pedestrian Safety Task Force spent more than a year analyzing traffic crash data from 2015 through 2025, and the review found roughly 1,000 reported crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists during that span, resulting in 53 fatalities, per the same mystateline.com account.
That data also showed Rockford averaging 22 traffic fatalities per year across all types of incidents over the decade reviewed, the report noted. The task force flagged State, Auburn and 11th streets as corridors and intersections with especially high crash occurrences.
Proposed Fixes Still Years Away
Task force discussions have centered heavily on lighting improvements, along with safer crosswalks, sidewalks and reduced speed limits, the outlet reported. Officials say any resulting updates would be implemented over several years through coordination between the city and local institutions, rather than as an immediate fix.
No details have been released about citations, charges or fault in Tuesday’s crash, and police have not identified the woman or the driver publicly. The investigation remains ongoing.
