Tyler Ulrich, a sophomore safety for Southern Nazarene University, remains in critical condition at an Arkansas hospital after an injury during Saturday’s football game. The university said he was receiving medical care; his family has asked for privacy while considering next steps in his care.

Ulrich was injured during SNU’s Saturday game against Arkansas-Monticello in Bethany. News 9 reported that he was taken for medical care, that teammates signaled for medical staff and that personnel from both teams responded. SNU play-by-play announcer Dave Myrick said Ulrich went down after a play that did not initially appear unusual.

Myrick estimated that the game was delayed between 45 minutes and an hour as Ulrich received care on the field. He said he could not determine what caused the injury. Separately, KOCO reported that the university said Ulrich experienced complications following the on-field injury.

Family Keeps Vigil, Asks for Privacy

News 9 reported that Ulrich’s grandmother, who identified herself as Nana Bea, spoke about his faith and the family’s reliance on prayer. Family member Karlee Demain said Ulrich remained in critical condition and that relatives were not sharing further medical updates at that time. The family thanked people for their support and asked for privacy as they considered next steps in his care.

According to the same News 9 account, Ulrich’s family is with him at the hospital. KOCO reported that SNU’s athletic director and coaches have been communicating directly with them. The university has not released details about the nature of his injury.

Campus Community Turns to Prayer

Tollya Spindle, SNU’s executive director of administration and communications, shared part of a statement sent to the campus community Sunday evening. The university said a student athlete had suffered a traumatic injury during the away game and was in critical condition while receiving medical care. It asked the community to pray for the injured player, his family, teammates and coaches. SNU also said another student was injured in a separate incident during the game and was expected to be okay.

Emergency Plans for On-Field Medical Response

A 2024 position statement from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association describes an emergency action plan as a written document outlining preparation for and coordination of on-site responses to medical emergencies. That general description does not establish what procedures were followed during the game in Bethany.

SNU students have organized a student-led prayer gathering that is closed to the public, and the university says it remains focused on supporting students and coaches now and in the days ahead. Before his injury, Ulrich had been one of the team's defensive leaders, averaging 7.8 tackles per game, according to Arkansas Online. The Crimson Storm entered the season having lost 11 of their past 12 games dating back to last season and sat at 0-4 overall, per that same report.
