A ferry crew pulled a passenger from the water Wednesday afternoon after the passenger went overboard during a crossing to Anderson Island, prompting a rescue near Steilacoom. West Pierce Fire & Rescue transported the passenger to a local hospital.
Emergency services were dispatched at 4:57 p.m. Wednesday after a passenger went into the water as the ferry headed to Anderson Island. Patch described the passenger as having fallen overboard during the Wednesday afternoon crossing and said officials had not released the passenger's identity or explained how the person entered the water.
Ferry crew members deployed a rescue boat and brought the passenger to shore, and The News Tribune reported that the vessel stopped mid-crossing so crews could safely recover the passenger from the water.
Responders Worked to Recover the Passenger
Emergency services responded as ferry crew members worked to bring the passenger to shore. The ferry stopped during the recovery.
The News Tribune reported that West Pierce Fire & Rescue handled the hospital transport after the passenger was brought ashore.
It wasn't the first time a water rescue has interrupted operations at the Steilacoom dock: Pierce County has said its ferry crew also rescued a man in September after his kayak capsized near the same location.
