A DoorDash delivery to a Waterbury home turned into an hours-long standoff with police negotiators early Thursday, Oct. 15, after two men allegedly brandished what looked like an assault rifle and stole the food without paying. No one was hurt and no shots were fired, but the confrontation at 65 Lone Oak Avenue was serious enough to bring out Waterbury's Emergency Response Team and Hostage Negotiation Team before it ended peacefully.
Police said the driver was delivering food to the residence at around 1:05 a.m. when two people inside the home brandished a weapon and took the order without paying, according to FOX61. Officers were notified about a robbery involving what appeared to be a firearm, setting off a response that escalated quickly given the apparent weapon involved.
Standoff Ends Without Shots Fired
After police were notified, the Emergency Response Team and members of the Hostage Negotiation Team arrived on the scene, the station reported. Following some negotiating, the suspects surrendered to police without incident and were taken into custody — a resolution that, as the outlet put it, meant fortunately no one was hurt, and no shots were fired.
Once the two were in custody, investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence. Inside, they found a black AR-15-style paintball gun, which they believe was used in the theft, per the same report — a detail that explains how the robbery looked serious enough to summon specialized police units even though it involved a food order rather than cash or valuables.
Two Men Face Different Charges
The two arrested were identified as 18-year-old Javion Miller and 19-year-old Jakai Miller, both of Waterbury, according to courant.com. The two men ended up facing very different legal consequences despite being arrested together.
Javion Miller was charged with interfering with officers, first-degree robbery and first-degree threatening, Daily Voice reported. He was held on a $250,000 bond, according to the outlet. Jakai Miller, by contrast, was charged only with interfering with officers and was released on a promise to appear in court, Daily Voice noted.
Court Dates
Jakai Miller is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 27, according to FOX61's reporting. FOX61 reported Javion Miller was scheduled to appear in court Friday, and WTNH reported he appeared on Oct. 16, 2026, which was a Friday.
No further details have emerged about the DoorDash driver's condition beyond the confirmation that no one was injured, nor has any information been released about the specific food order involved or whether it was recovered. The case remains open as both men's court proceedings move forward.
