A 24-year-old Gonzales man is behind bars after deputies say he sexually assaulted a woman at gunpoint inside a South Sammy Street home after she turned down his advances. David Levy now faces first-degree rape, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon following his arrest early Monday morning.
The woman reportedly met Levy at the South Sammy Street residence, according to the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office. Deputies responded to a reported sexual assault there on Sunday, as reported by WBRZ. Investigators said Levy allegedly sexually assaulted her at gunpoint after she rejected him.
Search Warrant Turns Up Firearm, Corroborating Evidence
Detectives obtained and executed a search warrant at the residence, and per deputies, they recovered a firearm along with other evidence that corroborated the woman's account of what happened. That evidence led directly to Levy's arrest, the station's report notes, with deputies booking him into the Ascension Parish Jail early Monday.
Beyond the rape charge, Levy was also booked on aggravated assault and on possession of a firearm by a convicted felon — a charge that points to a prior felony conviction barring him from legally owning a gun, according to the same account.
What Louisiana Law Says About the Top Charge
The first-degree rape count Levy faces carries severe weight under Louisiana law. Under the state statute governing the offense, anyone convicted of first-degree rape faces life imprisonment at hard labor, without the possibility of parole, probation or suspension of sentence, according to the Louisiana Legislature.
No additional details about a court date, bond status, or legal representation for Levy have been released. The case remains under investigation by the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office.
