Muni, politics, trees, the Wiggle, pop-ups -- it's the most leftovery leftovers ever!
Let's get started.
Readers Jason H. and Leah O. inform us that the three California redwood trees at Steiner and Page are fated to be removed today. Apparently public support wasn't enough to save these gentle giants from the axeman. Goodbye, redwoods -- ye shall be missed.
Tomorrow (Saturday) at Lower Haters, FAZE apparel hosts a one-day pop-up shop, taking over the space along with five other brands. In addition to plenty of apparel for sale, expect music, live painting, food, and possibly beverages. That's 10am to 11pm at Lower Haters (597 Haight Street).
Also tomorrow, Glass Key Photo within Rooky Ricardo's Records at 448 Haight hosts "Made You Look", a photography and music event. From 5pm to 10pm, there will be photography by 10 artists on display, plus live music and more. Check GKP's Facebook page for more details.
This week, Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, former Supervisor of District 5 (which encompasses most of the Lower Haight), pleaded guilty to false imprisonment, which is defined as "the unlawful violation of the personal liberty of another." In striking the plea deal, other charges against Mirkarimi related to a New Year's Eve incident involving his wife were dropped, including domestic violence battery, child endangerment, and dissuading of a witness. Mirkarimi will be sentenced Monday to three years' probation, domestic violence and parenting classes, 100 hours of community service, and fees of about $600. Mayor Ed Lee is now mulling over whether Mirkarimi's guilty plea makes him unfit to continue serving as Sheriff. Stay tuned.
In cheerier political news, be sure to check out Local Addition's profile of Lower Haight Merchants and Neighbors Association president Thea Selby, who is running for District 5 Supervisor this fall. Go Thea!
If you fly American Airlines this month, you might notice Three Twins Ice Cream founder Neal Gottlieb on the cover of their in-flight magazine. That's because Neal recently won American's Road Warrior contest, beating many other frequent travelers for the coveted spot on the mag's cover (plus 1 million frequent flyer miles!). Congrats Neal!
Did you know that The Wiggle used to be a stream bed? Well, sort of. That's just one of the revelations in an article published this week by Bay Nature. Check it out.
In closing, we've finally discovered what it takes to get Muni operating normally: bad weather! In a statement that made us smirk, the SFMTA tweeted yesterday:

Heads' Up: Due to weather the N Judah Line will operate normally this weekend(no construction)OK, so this just means that the construction at Duboce and Church will be halted due to the rain, so the N Judah can operate on its regular pre-construction schedule. Still, we got excited there for a second...
