If you notice 24,000 more people than usual in the neighborhood tomorrow morning, don't panic -- it's just the SF Marathon.
Here's what to expect.
The intersection of Haight and Divisadero is the 20-mile-mark of the route. The first runners leave from the Embarcadero at 5:30am, so they should get to the Lower Haight by around 7:30am. The last stragglers usually pass through the neighborhood by 11am or so. The race route travels eastward on Haight, although at Scott Street there is a slight detour. Every minute, the route alternates, sending some runners south a block and eastward along Waller. Both routes continue until Buchanan, where they turn south to Duboce and on to the Mission. Haight Street will be closed to traffic during the race, obviously. If you need to drive across, you'll be able to do so at Steiner and Fillmore -- but expect delays. Muni service will also be disrupted. The 6 and 71 will be rerouted, while the 22 is expected to be delayed as it crosses Haight and Fillmore. If you need to get downtown, the SFMTA encourages you to take the N or the J. Meanwhile, if you live in the neighborhood and are looking to watch the race, you have plenty of options. Snag an outdoor seat at Bean There or Cafe du Soleil if you want a front-row view of the Waller segment of the race. If Haight Street's your thing, get a table at the Grind, or in the window of Cafe International, Nectar, or Mad Dog in the Fog. Early brunch at Nickies or Greenburger's could also provide a glimpse of the tail end of the race. Of course, you can also just cheer from the sidewalk, if you prefer.
