A short film made by a Lower Haighter will screen at the Cannes Film Festival next month.
The 18-minute-long film is called "Stepsister," and stars Brent Weinbach, Beth Lisick, and Anna Seregina. You'll almost definitely recognize Seregina from her nearly five-year stint as a barista at Bean There. "Stepsister" is written and directed by Lower Haighter Joey Izzo, and features Seregina in the title role as a woman who feels threatened by her stepbrother's relationship with his fiancé. It was filmed in Hayes Valley and the Lower Haight. Here's the trailer: The film was one of 18 selected out of more than 1,500 submissions to compete in the Cinéfondation portion of the Short Films competition. It's not all smooth sailing between here and the French Riviera, though. First, they have to get the film Cannes-ready, which means paying for an HD transfer, adding French subtitles, and creating promotional materials -- and they need your help. To fund the roughly $3000 undertaking, the crew has just launched an Indiegogo campaign. Your donation can get you anything from a high-five to a bowling night with the producer and director, in addition to helping the Lower Haight represent on a world stage. So, click here to contribute. And if you'd like to catch "Stepsister" before it hits Cannes, don't miss the San Francisco International Film Festival. The film will have its world premiere on April 27th at 9:30pm, and will screen again on May 4th at 4pm, both at the New People Cinema in Japantown.
