When you look at the calendar today, you probably see May 4th. But if you were Brian Hibbs of Comix Experience, you would see the biggest day of the year. That's because it's the first Saturday of May, also known around the world as Free Comic Book Day.
For the annual event, comic book publishers like Marvel, DC, and Archie Comics print up a set of special editions of some of their most popular titles. Those include Superman, Star Wars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Smurfs, and the Tick. In total there are 52 different comic books available, with each retailer deciding which ones they want to carry. Brian has chosen about 35 which he'll offer at Comix Experience today. He expects one of the most popular might be a comic book version of the AMC TV show The Walking Dead. Free Comic Book Day is primarily geared towards children, who may just be getting into comic books, or may have never stepped foot inside a comic book shop before. Brian says that kids are often amazed when they're told they can take home a comic book for free -- or even take more than one. Adults can participate as well, though Brian expects to set a cap of two or three free books per adult, to make sure there are enough for the kids. Overall, Brian says the event has a great neighborhood feel to it, with local parents coming in with their children, and many familiar faces showing up over the course of the day. The shop at 305 Divisadero will be open from 11am to 7pm, so if you have kids, are a kid, or just love comic books, be sure to stop by.
