New Stop Signs Catch Drivers By Surprise

New Stop Signs Catch Drivers By Surprise
A couple of new stop signs were installed at Haight and Broderick recently, much to the surprise of at least a few of our readers.

Just a year ago, the SFMTA installed right-turn only signs at the intersection for traffic flowing north and south on Broderick. The east/west traffic on Haight was unimpeded, although there was a no-left-turn sign for traffic flowing east on Haight. Now the intersection is a 4-way stop, with the turning rules eliminated. These new changes were requested by a resident, according to an SFMTA summmary. While the goal is to "create a safer transportation experience for everyone," some of our readers have been caught off-guard by the new signs after years of traveling down Haight without stopping. One reader writes:
"[W]hat is up with the new STOP sign at Haight and Broderick?! I was out of town for 2 weeks and thank goodness I noticed everyone stopping – otherwise I would have blown right through it going up and down the hill."
Another concurs:
"I've been blowing through the haight/Broderick intersection for years with no stop sign. Slammed on the brakes today when I saw stop signs at the last second. Granted, should have had a stop sign for years, but anyone living in this neighborhood for a while will be pretty surprised at the stop signs (if they notice them at all)."
Still, a third reader appreciates the elimination of the turning rules.
"It may be inconvenient for drivers on Haight, but for those residents who live on Waller / Broderick between Divisadero and Haight, it was pretty frustrating not being able to turn left or go straight."
So, if you're driving or biking through Haight and Broderick any time soon, keep an eye out for these new changes. They may take some getting used to, as is true with all unexpected developments in life.
