Yesterday evening a couple was robbed at gunpoint outside the Eureka Valley Recreation Center at 18th and Collingwood. After leaving the community center around 9:15PM, husbands Jimmy Whelan and Patrick Shortle were held at gunpoint near the dog area by two unidentified young adults in hoodies and forced to give up their laptop, cell phones, wallets, and Patrick's wedding ring. Jimmy noted that he believed the only reason they were not shot by the suspects was that his husband was able to get his wedding ring off in time. "I was sure they were going to pull the trigger," Jimmy said in a Facebook post, "Right now, no one can tell me that the Castro is a safe place after dark." After SFPD arrived on the scene, officers took Patrick to Dolores Park where two young adults wearing hoodies were being detained in connection with a similar crime to see if Patrick recognized them. Unfortunately, they were not the same individuals. Supervisor Scott Wiener expressed his concern and said that he would talk to the Recreation and Parks department about the inadequate lighting in the area. Additionally, yesterday evening around 6PM there was an assault with a deadly weapon on the 2000 block of Market Street. A 31 y/o female was cut with a knife on her upper torso by a white male aged 20-30. The suspect fled and was not apprehended. Anyone with information regarding these crimes is being asked to contact the police at 415-575-4444 or text-a-tip to TIP411 with SFPD at the beginning of the message.
