You'll probably be hearing the national anthem a lot today. When you need to cleanse your palate, here's an anthem that hits a little closer to home.

Lower Haight resident Katie Day recorded the following track, titled "Lower Haight Anthem," earlier this year. As Katie tells us, the song was commissioned by D-Structure's Devon Chulick for a brand video the shop was creating. "We've been good friends for about a year and he is familiar with my other music," Katie says, "so he gave me a general idea of what he wanted and commissioned me to write the song. Once I was finished with it, I contacted another Lower Haight resident, my good friend and awesome producer Scott McDowell, who works out of Hyde St. Studio C and engineered my last EP. We worked together for a couple days in the studio, him helping me with ideas and me performing all the instruments and vocal tracks (except, obviously, the children's voices). We were totally stoked when it came together." Katie says she has lived in many cities over the years, but this is the neighborhood that feels like home -- and she wanted to capture that with her Lower Haight Anthem. "I feel like the song is a genuine encapsulation of my sentiments about the Lower Haight, the sense of community surrounding D-Structure, and all of the good people in the area I've met in my few years here. I'm originally from Chicago, went to music school in Boston, lived in Nashville for a few years, and then made my way here from Nashville about two and a half years ago. I never want to leave." If you're interested in hearing more of Katie's music, visit katherineday.bandcamp.com or soundcloud.com/katherineday, or catch her at The Chapel on July 20th as part of an Americana project called We Became Owls. In the meantime, here are the lyrics to her sunny summer serenade:
You, you, you have a way Of bringin' it back home, bringin' it back home I could stay here all day With everyone we know, everyone we know Front steps with the stereo blasting (stereo blasting) I guess this is where it all happens (where it all happens) It's happening, sit back and take it in Aww, hey hey it's goin' down so dress me up and take me out (it's goin' down) This town is ours tonight Aww, hey hey it's poppin' off ain't stoppin' til we get enough (it's poppin' off) So grab your suit and tie one on and brush your shoulders off I could go far away Mountains to the sea shore, mountains to the sea shore Haight Street's callin' my name Got me comin' back for more, comin' back for more Late nights with the stereo blasting (stereo blasting) Looks like this is where it all happens (where it all happens) It's happening, sit back and take it in
Happy 4th, Haighters.
