It's been a while since we last rounded up some leftovers for you. Here are eleven small news bites that nearly fell through the cracks this week.
First, some events. There's a new show up at 4x5 Gallery (442 Haight). "Spring in Japan," a collection of color images by photographer Yelena Zhavoronkova, debuted last week, and will be up until Monday. The gallery is open from noon to 6pm every day.
The Harvey Milk Photo Center (50 Scott St) also has a new photo show up. It's an LGBT Family Photo Exhibit, depicting "the many forms and facets of family within the Bay Area LGBT and straight ally community." The show opened last night, and will be up through December 14th.
Tonight, DSF (520 Haight) hosts another edition of Berlin-Style Ping Pong, put on by the good folks at American Tripps. There will be "refreshments, dirty dancing, and jams courtesy of DJ Nattles." It starts at 8pm, and costs $5 at the door.
Skincare salon Skin City (323 Divisadero), which is a Haighteration advertiser, will be hosting an event tonight called a "Peel" Party. There will be wine and cheese, plus skin peel treatments for $40 per person or $60 for two people, from 5pm to 8pm. You can book an appointment online or via phone - (415) 255-4777.
New barbershop J.P. Kempt (351 Divisadero) will be having a grand opening celebration this Sunday from 5pm to 8pm. "We're pushing aside the barber chairs and inviting our friends, families and community to visit the shop, meet our great team, and join us for fine drinks, charcuterie and cheese," they write.
A slew of local businesses were named in SF Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay 2013 awards this week. Here they are (readers poll winners marked with a *): Nopa (best overall restaurant*) Nopalito (best Mexican* [tie], best paleta cleanser) Memphis Minnie's (best barbecue*) Molotov's (best jukebox*) Toronado (best selection of beers*, best barleywine blast) The Squat (best secret verse) Bar Crudo (best seafood*) Aline's Closet (best dreamy dressmaker) Jack's Record Cellar (best 78s off Haight) Zerofriends (best horror hound decor) Golden Produce (best fresh produce*) Madrone (best singles bar*) The Page (best bar for a second date) Clipper Construction (best repair grand central) Little Star (best pizza*) and Haighteration (best news blog or website*)
There hasn't been much news about 705 Divisadero since August, when we learned that 4505 Meats would be taking over the address. Well, this week there was a minor development: 4505's parent company officially filed for a beer and wine license for the location.
Also on Divis, Mexican restaurant La Urbana (661 Divisadero) has officially opened a new side space called El Garage Urbano. As UrbanDaddy notes, it'll be open Thursday through Saturday, featuring beer, mezcal punch, dominoes, and other laid-back amenities to enjoy while you wait for a table -- or as a destination in its own right.
Some new street art went up on the side of a building at Webster and Haight on Wednesday:
SFist notes that "Looking," the new HBO show that's been filming all over the neighborhood in recent weeks, now has a premiere date: January 19th at 10:30pm.
And finally, Groove Merchant Records (687 Haight) was featured in a film series last week called Behind the Counter, in which owner "Cool Chris" Veltri was asked to pick five favorite records in the shop:
