SF Gate announced yesterday the art show opening of "Portraits From the Castro" the retrospective of the late Beth Van Hoesen's (1926-2010) never-before-seen or rarely exhibited work this Friday at the George Krevsky Gallery. The show includes portraits and watercolors of drag queens, punks, leather daddies, activists, and other stoically portrayed out loud figures that Van Hoesen drew and painted while she was living at 22nd and Castro in the late 80's and early 90's. Castro Biscuit's own Waiyde Palmer (drawn with punk attitude and vibrant dyed-blue hair) was even one of Van Hoesen's subjects.
Money raised at the show will go to help construct the Rainbow Honor Walk which is a memorial to LGBT change makers throughout history set to be completed with the Castro Street Redesign.
The show is open and free to the public and runs from this Friday to March 1st. Gallery hours are 11AM to 5:30PM Tuesday through Saturday. The George Krevsky Gallery is located at 77 Geary Street near Union Square.
