The deadline approaches to voice public comment on the National Park Service's proposed revision of the regulations for on- and off-leash dogs in Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The NPS's plan is only the most recent iteration of a plan, called its "Dog Management Plan," which has been in the works since at least 2011, and which was revised after extensive comments submitted in response to the September 2013 edition of the impact report. Comments on the current proposal are due by February 18, right here. Dog advocacy groups, most notably this one, have been making the rounds lately to let the public know about the proposed changes to off-leash dog accessibility in the city. The final rule on the new regulations won't be published or even decided until the winter of 2015, the NPS estimates on its web site. Significantly to the Haight, the proposal is only pertinent to areas managed by the National Park Service: Fort Funston, Crissy Field, Ocean Beach, the Presidio, Baker Beach and large portions of Lincoln Park. In other words, dog access wouldn't be affected in Buena Vista Park, Golden Gate Park or the Panhandle, unless everyone who used to go to Crissy Field starts hiking into the Haight.
