Tonight's Muni ride home will require three transfers, take three hours, and cost you about $40.

Wait wait, hear us out—this could be the best commute of your life.

The SF Transit Riders Union (SFTRU) has organized a Public Transit Pub Crawl aimed at taking you on a lubricated journey from Mid-Market to the Inner Sunset.

Gather for your first beverage at 5pm at Mr. Smith's (7th and Market).  As the 6pm hour approaches, you'll hop on a 71L with your fellow crawlers and head to Haight and Fillmore, where you'll disembark for a brew at Mad Dog in the Fog.  By 7pm you'll be on board a 6-Parnassus en route to the Upper Haight's Martin Macks  (Haight and Clayton).  Finally, save room for one last tipple as you brave the 71-Haight for an 8pm rendezvous at Yancy's Saloon near 9th and Irving.

The fun should be over by 8:40pm or so, after which you'll have to make your way home by the transportation means of your choice. Or stay for another drink—that's up to you.

The cost is up to you, too: you can either pay for it all out of pocket, or sign up for a one-year SFTRU membership for $40 and get four drink tickets in return. Either way, the cost of transit is your responsibility.

Organizers are hoping "to raise awareness about public transit and its importance, and to raise a little cash for the SF Transit Riders' advocacy on the three transportation ballot measures we'll be voting on in November," SFTRU vice-chair Thea Selby tells us.

Those ballot measures include:

  • Proposition A, a $500 million bond measure to finance Muni infrastructure and street improvements
  • Proposition B, which would tie transportation funding increases to the city's population growth
  • Proposition L, the so-called "Restoring Transportation Balance" measure that would try to steer official city policy away from its current transit-first stance and toward building a more car-friendly utopia.

As you might imagine, the SFTRU heartily supports A and B, and vehemently opposes L.

You can discuss these and other burning Muni-related issues with your fellow imbibers at tonight's crawl. Again, the action kicks off at 5pm at Mr. Smith's, 34 7th Street. Check out SFTRU's Facebook page for more information.
