Art and food grace this week's Hayes Valley roundup, with a plethora of events for all types happening just steps from your front door.
- Hayes Valley resident Todd Young was recently featured in San Francisco Public Press for his creative artwork on his home's front gate. From recreations of the Conservatory of Flowers to the North Pole, Todd is building community and getting to know his neighbors through his passion for decoration. "I realized that it draws people in and that it’s inviting rather than off-putting, which is what security gates tend to be," he told us back in October. "Now, I know all my neighbors. How many other places in San Francisco can someone know all of their neighbors?”
- This coming Wednesday, April 15th marks the next installment of Nerd Nite at the Rickshaw Stop. For a full background on the most popular nerd gathering in San Francisco, check out our post from a couple weeks ago, where we talked with organizer Bart about what makes a good show. This week's talks will include dinosaur recreations, the social systems of fish, and the honeybee super organism. More info and tickets here.
- Sign up early for Makeshift Society's next class on Watercolor Lettering & Gold Leafing. On May 7th, learn typography, brush lettering, and watercolor techniques with instructor and artist Alessandra Lanot. Classes sell out fast, so if you're interested register today.
- Poetry lovers, mark this coming weekend on your calendars. The 2015 SFJAZZ Poetry Festival runs from April 16th-19th, with each night featuring a curated collection of poets from different places in the Bay Area (Berkeley, Oakland, San Jose and San Francisco). The theme is "The Cities Speak of Poetry". Learn more and buy tickets on SF Jazz's website.
- While you're waiting for all of the above events to take place, swing by Two Sisters Bar and Books, which was just voted as one of San Francisco's Best Happy Hour Deals by Timeout Magazine. Anywhere else in Hayes Valley you think should have made the list?
- Neighbors Blue Bottle Coffee and Smitten Ice Cream have teamed up to create a limited run of Blue Bottle Espresso ice cream. The unique blend is only available until April 19th, so hop to it if that sounds right up your alley.
- Whether you like or dislike food critic Michael Bauer, readers may be interested in his latest review of a Hayes Valley restaurant. Bauer wrote a lengthy piece on Boxing Room last week, with a focus on their newest cocktail offering. Read the full review here.
Happy art-making, eating and drinking, Hoodline readers!
