If your calendar is looking a little quiet for the upcoming week, consider heading out in the Tenderloin, where the neighborhood is buzzing with art shows, a new restaurant opening, prototypes for the future of Market Street and more. Here's what's happening:
- Rusty's Southern officially opened its doors at 750 Ellis St., and brunch service started this past weekend. Swing by for fried chicken, catfish po'boys, and more, and learn more about their menu and mission in our interview with owners Rusty and Francis.
- This Tuesday, April 7th SFAQ [Project] Space will be featuring the first event in their "Style Series." The inaugural presentation will focus on American Gothic style, bringing local writers, performers, theorists, and historians together for a presentation and discussion. Doors are at 6pm at 449 O'Farrell St., and the talk will take place from 7-8pm.
- On Wednesday, March 8th, everyone's favorite drag dive Aunt Charlie's is hosting its Dream Queens Revue drag show, as it does every second and fourth Wednesday of the month. Festivities start at 9:30pm at 133 Turk St.
- Mark your calendars for a movie screening and talk at St. Anthony's on Thursday April 9th. The organization has launched a Social Justice Cinema series, and will start off with a screening of A Place At The Table, which "tells the powerful stories of three Americans, who maintain their dignity even as they struggle just to eat." The event will take place from 5:30-8:30pm on April 9th at 150 Golden Gate Ave.
- The Market Street Prototyping Festival is taking place along Market from Embarcadero to Van Ness streets, starting this Thursday and ending on Saturday. An open call was put out several months ago for ways to bring art and functionality to Market Street, and this festival shows 50 prototypes of these ideas, ranging from mobile libraries to community chalkboards to large-scale art installations. A full schedule of events can be found on the Festival's website.
- Last but not least, Root Division's next art opening is taking place on Saturday April 11th from 7-10pm, at the art organization's temporary home at 1059 Market St. Called Still Life, the show "embraces and challenges the wide ranging art historical and contemporary genre of the same name." More info can be found on the event page.
